Frequently Asked Questions

  • I've never surfed before, is that okay?"
Most of our students are brand new. We teach people from ages 6 - 62 on a regular basis. Our surfing lessons are usually taught in shallow water with slower/gentle waves that are suited for newer surfers. We're excellent for families. Our soft top surfboards are also the safest boards in the market and they're easy to use.
  • What happens in a typical lesson?
You should arrive 15 minutes before your lesson start time. Your first 15 minutes will be spent on the beach learning: - Basic ocean safety - About your surfboard - Paddling technique - General surfing theory Next, you'll hop in the ocean with your instructor and he/she will stay in the water for the remaining 45 minutes giving you effective advice and helping to push you into waves if necessary. After your 1-hour lesson time, you're able to keep using your wetsuit and surfboard FREE for the rest of the day. Surf until you're tired!
  • What should I bring for the lesson / rental?
Old swimsuit / shorts to wear under wetsuit Towel Sunscreen Bug spray Drinking water and snacks as there is often no food and water available at the beach Warm clothing as the beach can often be much cooler than Halifax
  • What is the cancellation policy?
12 hours or more before lesson: FULL REFUND Less than 12 hours of notice or no show: NO REFUND
  • Do you teach kids? Older adults? Families?
We offer lessons for kids as young as 6 (suitable age may vary with each child). Our teaching spot is usually very shallow. That being said, we do offer recomendations for days with very small surf that are most suitable for young ones. Another good idea is to hire a private instructor for your young child to ensure a 1:1 ratio with an instructor. We're well suited for familiy surf days for people of all ages.
  • How well do I need to be able to swim?
Most of the time, Martinique Beach is quite shallow. Often, lessons happen in waist-chest deep water. Wetsuits offer surprising bouyancy. That being said, it is recommended that you can swim 25 meters with relative ease and that you're able to keep your head above water without panicking.
  • What days and times are lessons offered?
Lessons are offered 7 days per week from May 15 - October 15. There are multiple lesson times available each day so contact us for availability.
  • What types of payment do you accept?
We accept email money transfers, debit, credit cards and cash. Card payment is available at our beach kiosk.
  • How early do I need to book lessons and rentals?
We recommend booking lessons at least 1 day in advance to allow for sufficient staffing. However, if you're looking to surf TODAY, give us a call and we will try to accomodate your request. You're also welcome to book months in advance if you're a serious planner. We do accept pre-bookings for rentals to ensure availability. You're also welcome to swing by the beach for rentals without pre-booking (subject to availabiliy).
  • What happens for bad weather? Big waves?
We run lessons in the rain. Rain doesn't necessarily mean that the waves won't be any good. However, if it's pouring or very windy, we occasionally need to reschedule lessons. If that needs to happen, we will contact you to offer a refund or to reschedule your session. We usually only have to reschedule 3-4 days per entire season. Occasionally, we also may have to cancel for large surf or for a lack of surf. This is also pretty rare and we will reach out in advance if this is likely to happen.
